Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In the aftermath of the chaotic incident at Sinthi Mor, where a drunken civic volunteer crashed his bike into a barricade during a peaceful student protest, former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee has questioned the criteria for appointing civic volunteers in West Bengal.
Chatterjee's remarks comes after the civic volunteer was released after being nabbed. This further escalated the matter with people protesting asking for his arrest, which led to a prolonged traffic disruption on the Dunlop-Shyambazar route.
Speaking out on the incident, Locket Chatterjee questioned the educational qualifications and training of civic volunteers. "What is the criteria for the appointment of these civic volunteers? How educated are they? Why is the Chief Minister so kind to them?" she asked.
The incident occurred late last night during a protest organized by students and alumni of Rabindra Bharati University. The protest, which was aimed at demanding justice for the rape and murder of a medical student, turned chaotic when the intoxicated civic volunteer crashed into a barricade and allegedly made offensive remarks. This led to a four-and-a-half-hour blockade at the Sinthi intersection, severely disrupting traffic.
The students, outraged by the volunteer's behavior, detained the police and demanded immediate action. The civic volunteer was taken into custody, and an FIR was registered against him. The blockade, which began around 4 AM, was eventually lifted after nearly five hours of disruption.
